Could an online gaming community become a non-profit organization? and if so what are the steps?

well I help run a online gaming clan ( http://www.fragcod.com ) and basically we setup a paypal donation thing the other day.... well we got our first donation only to find out that were being charged a fee for each donation... is there a way to eliminate these paypal fee's? also should I file with the IRS and a non-profit organization? could I even do that with a gaming clan? our server have provided a service to way over 4000+ people just within the last week... any idea's?

I was a former determinations specialist and auditor with the IRS and I fail to see how this activity differentiates itself from a typical for-profit on-line gaming activity.

I think you would be wasting you time the application process not to mention the upfront application fee.
Reply:Getting charitable status is practically impossible.

Getting non-profit status is easy.
Reply:dude, I'd agree with the first poster. Try non-for profit organization.
Reply:According to Non-Profit Gaming Regulation 1999, a gaming community can function as a non-profit organization.
