What do you want in an online writing community?

Looking to start writing group over the web, and am gathering ideas.

What do you want in an online writing community?
I want good moderation. No trolls, no spam.

I want several professional writers whose works are published who are very active there.

I want boards divided by genre. IMO, mystery writers aren't qualified to critique westerns, and memoir writers may not be the best choice for giving feedback to screenwriters.

I want the absence of any petty martinet(s) who scold or lecture.

I want standards and even instruction for critique.

I want AbsoluteWrite, I guess.

Does anyone know of a GOOD online support community for those who are dealing with stillborn losses?

I need to talk to people in my situation, it will help me to get through this pain, in the right way, instead of just ignoring it, and having it haunt me the rest of my life.

Does anyone know of a GOOD online support community for those who are dealing with stillborn losses?
Sorry for your loss. iVillage has a Stillborn support board.

Reply:I am so sorry for your loss sweetie...My suggestion to you, would to be to pray for God to help you endure this pain...and to pray that you will have another little one, and for Him to embrace your little angel until you see them again...Ask Through Jesus, to sooth you, and comfort you...No one can sooth you as the Lord JESUS CHRIST can do, or Father God...I have not experienced that kind of a loss, but it has to be heartbreaking. But I have seen couples who never though they would get through it, only to be blessed with more beautiful children....my prayers are with you sweetheart...and don't let it haunt you the rest of your life, just keep your little angel in your heart, for the rest of your life...I am so sorry...yes, you are so right...God does know best...and these things do happen to His children...I will keep praying for you to be comforted too sweetheart....and to stay strong...

No idea what kind of photography you're into but the best online community of nature photographers I've ever found is the Nature Photographers Network (www.naturephotographers.net). I like this site. I dont participate much because I just dont have the skill level that the photographers on there have but it is a good site and has a lot of educational info posted all the time. If you tell them you are new you will get a good helpful response but they are not very tolerant of those who make no effort to improve.

They also have several weekly threads that are dedicated to practicing submitting and learning photography and editing skills.

If you go to the sites main page you will also find a ton of other forums on a ton of other subjs from stupid funny crap to news to other electronics and comps

On Gaia, the online web community, people frequently post webcomics from a certain source in their signature..

There's a webcomic series that I've never had the time to find the site to, but it features really bizarre humor. I've seen several people quote it in their signatures and I believe there's a URL in each comic that leads you to the main site page.

It features, not stick figures per say, but very basically drawn people in various situations. The strips are usually about 3-6 panels long, and some deal in rather adult topics. I believe the author even spent a week or so working on comics specifically to demonstrate the effects of drugs on people once. There were several of them along this line.

I'm sorry I can't recall any more information about it, but any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated...

Community college that offers online bible studies?

I need to find a community college where i can get a degree or certficate online for bible studies/ theology. I need a cheap school. Please help! (i am not doing it for a job, but for my own personal benifit, so a certificate would be ok too).

Community college that offers online bible studies?
In the United States, state and federally funded community colleges do not offer "theology" programs; it would be a violation of the separation of church and state.

Im a highschool sophmore wondering which is the best college? Community, online, correspondence or university.
No doubt that University is the best way, however your question don 't give a reason for your interest. If money is a problem or perhaps you need to work, then your best option is a Community College. You will be able to adjust your schedule around your classes. But the best thing about your question is that you seem really interest in pursuing an education.. GOOD LUCK

Do you think Yahoo answers instills a fake sense of community online?

Do you think Yahoo answers instills a fake sense of community online?
Everything on internet is either real or spammers.
Reply:yeah i suppose u could put it that way
Reply:I think it creates a very genuine sense of community, much like eBay does or even MySpace to a certain extent. I mean this counts for people who use it regularly and almost get to know each other in this virtual world.

I genuinely care about helping people who post sincere-sounding questions on here, and no I've never met up in person with anyone from Answers. Yet!
Reply:I'm new--so maybe down the road I'll feel that.
Reply:No, I don't feel any sense of community at all. And that's what I like about it.
Reply:I haven't met any of these people in person but I have talked with them online via IM. I genuinely care about people. I try not to be rude when people ask silly questions. I will give them silly answers or tell them that if they are bored they should read a book then come back with more interesting questions.I like to think that I have made a difference in the world.Love Maeve.
Reply:'A fake sense of community'?

The whole thing is rooted in cyberspace to begin with. Like any virtual existence, it's only as real as the people who frequent it.

The people here are real enough but... I don't come here to make new friends. I come to ask and answer questions. It's both a form of entertainment and a way to extend my knowledge. Sometimes I come away knowing something new... other times, I just come away mildly entertained.

That's real enough for me.
Reply:I help people anyway, even though I know most people would be too suspicious %26amp; paranoid to meet in real life-thats one of the reasons I suggested a yearly group meeting of yahoo answers participants-which now is taking place ,at least in the USA.
Reply:no
Reply:What's fake about communicating with others even if you don't meet them? It's still 'talking' to those whose questions we answer.

Online college classes. Are there online classes offered by community colleges that would transfer?

to a University degree program. I have 15 credits from University...then academic suspension, need 1 semester of community college. Can I get transferable credits for one semester from all online classes? thanks

Online college classes. Are there online classes offered by community colleges that would transfer?
There are plenty and you don't have to look very hard to find them. Pick a state and type into google "%26lt;yourstate%26gt; community college system" and you will get a page from your state system. You may need to surf around your state page a little to find it but it's there.

On that page there will be a search bar somewhere - type in "online classes" or simply "distance". That should bring up the right place to find classes online at your state community colleges.

I did this for South Carolina (my state) and come up with this:

http://www.sctechsystem.com/

and right there on the top of the page is a link to "distance education" which takes us to here http://www.sctechsystem.com/distlrng.htm and a link to web based classes takes us to https://itsrv.ptc.edu/techonline/index.p... which is where we can pick some classes such as Accounting Principles I at Spartanburg Technical College.
Reply:Absolutely yes, almost all if not all the online courses at my community college transfer to state schools among others. your best bet is to check with the community colleges transfer department who will be able to tell you if the courses you need are transferable to the university you need them to transfer to
Reply:yes there are some

but u will have to work really hard for even finding them

Are Online classes at a community college as well reconized as real classes?

I plan on getting an associate degree at a local community college and then transfering to a 4 year university. I work a full time job and would like to take a few online courses, but was wondering if having online credits would make it harder to transfer to a four year university.

Are Online classes at a community college as well reconized as real classes?
If you're taking the online class through the community college, you should have no problem transferring the credits just like a normal class.

4 year universities might have different policies for transferring units from "online-only" universities, trade schools, or for-profit universities.

But yes, online classes require a lot of self-discipline and a *lot* of reading, writing, and independent learning. If that works for you, go for it!
Reply:The transcript looks the same regardless of the class format.
Reply:You betcha!!!
Reply:In Canada yes
Reply:On line courses at a qualified college are no different as far as your final grade than regular classes you attend in a classroom. They will appear the same on your transcript.

What you need to consider is what kind of learner are you. Will you keep up with the work on line? Will you learn as much with out the live interaction of people. I learn better when I see, hear, and recite things. That does not happen on line.

From the people that I've spoken with you need to be very disciplined for one line classes. If you are, then they are a great thing.

Online Degrees (University of Phoenix) VS. Community College?

My husband is in the military and I was wondering, due to the fact that we are going to be moving around a lot, would it be smarter to go to an online college or a community college to get my associates degree in arts and sciences? We have a baby on the way and I have to work. The extra money is nice and I become moody and depressed if I don't work. I've heard that the University of Phoenix is over priced and that a lot of companies do not accept it as a legitimate degree. However, if I do go the community college I'd have to take night classes. Plus there is always a chance that we could get stationed somewhere else...if that happens will my student loan be transfered over to my new school? And will I still only have to start paying once I graduate? Any answers will be appreciated. Thank you!

Online Degrees (University of Phoenix) VS. Community College?
My experience - friends that did online degrees and also in-class participants in "colleges" like those online - is that they are way overpriced and like you said, aren't considered quite legitimate degrees.

To my knowledge, all colleges now offer online classes. Not all classes are offered online... but you'll be surprised at how many are. This option would get you out of taking night classes...

If you have an idea of where you might be transfered to next, I would suggest submitting your FAFSA information to colleges in that area as well as the one you want to attend where you are now. This will cover your butt when you have to transfer and relieve a lot of frustration dealing with financial aid tracking. (Keep in mind that if you stick to online classes and then move, you probably will be able to finish the semester online and not worry about it - do keep your school informed of any changes though.)

Generally, student loans become payable 60 days after a six month grace period, after you graduate, drop to less than half time status or withdraw from school.

Sit down with an adviser at your local community college and pose all of your questions to them. Then, while you are there, talk with a financial aid adviser as well.

Regardless, your first step is to fill out a FAFSA. You can do that here http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Good luck and congratulations on your decision to continue your education!
Reply:Whatever on-line college or university you choose, be VERY careful and do lots of research! Even if a program states that they are "accredited," you need to know WHO they are accredited by.

I previously had a roommate who was in the Coast Guard and had started going to school. During his semester the hurricanes around Florida hit and he was called away for "extra" duty. I know that b/c it was a military situation, the college allowed him to withdraw and get his money back. So, that could be a question that you ask any college you are interested in.

Good luck!
Reply:What you have heard about the University of Phoenix is true -- it is overpriced and employers do not take it seriously. having a degree from the University of Phoenix is -- in my opinion -- worse than having no degree at all.

If your only other choice is to go to a community college -- do that.
Reply:The key is that the college or university is accredited by a regional accreditation body in the US. An example in the Southeast is SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools). I would look for a good online program from a regionally accredited body as this is accepted by other colleges and universities as a legitimate degree.
Reply:Look for an online course from a real university. It will be cheaper than UPhoenix and better respected.
Reply:I am going to Kaplan University and its 350 per credit hour. I like it better than community colleges. You will be working on your own time instead of a schedule and even if you have to move you can take it with you unlike the community college. So I would say in your situation I would go with the online college. I am looking into Peru state college too. Its alot cheaper than kaplan. Hope this helps

Need community building ideas for an online young adult spiritual community (Unitarian Universalist)?

Hi,

I am on the Steering Committee for the Church of the Younger Fellowship, a Unitarian Universalist online congregation for young adults aged 18-35. I am working on trying to build a greater sense of community in our congregation and increase discussions and general interaction, all of which can be quite low. It can also be difficult to get members to volunteer to help with this process, which is not something which can only be done by a small group.

Any suggestions on how we might increase member interaction and create a sense of community? We have discussion boards, a religious library, groups which can be used for educational and social purposes, blogs, and news sections, as well as an area to share joys and concerns which is the most popular section. Participations in discussions and groups tend to be quite low, especially.

Thanks!

Need community building ideas for an online young adult spiritual community (Unitarian Universalist)?
I think one of the biggest things you can do is what you've done here. Get the word out. I wasn't even aware of its existence. Particularly, I think you need to alert the local congregations. This is something they can pass on to their youth who are college bound.
Reply:Have you poked through the archives of the UUA mailing lists? They would have fewer responses but be much more focused. I belong to Websters, for web keepers. They must have one or six for young adults and those who minister to them.

well I help run a online gaming clan ( http://www.fragcod.com ) and basically we setup a paypal donation thing the other day.... well we got our first donation only to find out that were being charged a fee for each donation... is there a way to eliminate these paypal fee's? also should I file with the IRS and a non-profit organization? could I even do that with a gaming clan? our server have provided a service to way over 4000+ people just within the last week... any idea's?

Could an online gaming community become a non-profit organization? and if so what are the steps?
I was a former determinations specialist and auditor with the IRS and I fail to see how this activity differentiates itself from a typical for-profit on-line gaming activity.

I think you would be wasting you time the application process not to mention the upfront application fee.
Reply:Getting charitable status is practically impossible.

Getting non-profit status is easy.

Reply:Yes, it does annoy me, especially when they talk very LOUD. But I don't like people who get mad at kids for just being on the game. If they aren't talking loud, cursing, or being stupid, then theres no reason to say anything about them. And saying "wait till your balls drop" doesn't help much. You know you've heard it.

But yeah, I usually tell them to chill out and talk quieter, and usually they listen.

I was the dummy generation for the new curriculum, and I have to say that MAKING people volunteer to get an education had stooped us to a low. But yes, you could volunteer for a forum that helps the community, help develop a website, etc,...But it should be approved by a counsellor or the principal of your school.

Back to main subject, I really need that invite. Be generous ppl and send them over. Thanks

Does anyone have access to aSmallWorld (net) community online?
I don't have access but a client for whom I designed a website gets hits from there. I don't know if she is a member but here is what I think.

The whole idea of the internet was to have a virtual world where everyone could have a freedom of speech and be treated equally. These invitation-only are a threat to the Net. I even take it as an insult. Is the Net too cheap for Jet Setters? They need to have their own websites? Well that's fine. I don't want them on the pages that I visit. Personally I could not care less about that site and would definitely decline any invitation I would get.

Don't get me wrong, I am not jealous or anything. I am just saying we make the Internet for world wide communication, not Jet Set Communication.

What is the legal procedure to evict a tenant (hasnt paid rent) in CA? Any online/community resources as well?

Tenant hasn't paid rent, it was due 20 days ago. I issued her a pay or quit notice, she failed to pay by the 3 day due date. I then issued her a 30 day notice. What do I do next to make sure I can get her out of my home? She has now given me 7 explanations as to when she will pay rent or why she cant.

What is the legal procedure to evict a tenant (hasnt paid rent) in CA? Any online/community resources as well?
You don't issue a 30 day notice after a 3 day notice, you start the eviction. California is very pro-tenant. You need to get an attorney or one of those service agencies to help you with this paperwork because you don't want to screw it up or it will void the eviction. You might have to re-serve her and DO NOT accept any money from her after re-serving her. Don't let a bunch of excuses delay your legal proceeding.

If you are too cheap to hire an attorney, then do yourself a favor and get a NOLO PRESS book on California landlord/tenant law. Any mis-step with the legal serving of paperwork will void your case and you will have to start over from zero. There are professional deadbeats out there who will know more about the eviction process than you do, and it sounds like you have one on your hands. Get tough and get started and get familiar with the legal framework of your situation.
Reply:You'll need to do unlawful detainer process. I recommend you subscribe to the Apartment Owners Association here. They have great resources and bon fide leads to handle the situation

Can anybody direct me to a website or software package that allows me to set up my own online community?

I'd like to be able to let users post photos, have discussions, maybe chat, and blogs. Are there any sites that let you host your own communities like this, or maybe some software so I can put it on a temporary server (my computer) that everybody can visit at specific times?

Anyone have ever had more than one user name in one online community?

Do you think it is amoral or immoral ?

Have you ever felt that you are forced to register your second user name when your first user name is till active?

Can you talk something about it ?

Thank you.

Anyone have ever had more than one user name in one online community?
Yes,,,,AH,,,,,No,,,,,,Maybe,LOL.I know of a few people who have had to have more than 1 user name.Reason because of harassment,Stalking,Or just people that take them self to serious and talk out their butt about somebody they don't know.So "NO" it is not a bad thing,Sometimes.
Reply:I would never DREAM of doing something like that. It is just flat out amoral. By the way, did you notice Mataman's wonderful response?

Why, that Mataman guy is so nice and always gives thoughtful responses. If you're reading this, I'd give him lots of positive votes, because he's the greatest.

Ah yea, and um.. having 2 accounts is bad...
Reply:Hi There,

Yes I have had over 50 names when I was in an online community. I dont think it's immoral if you are honest about it . When I was online with yahoo I always went to the same room and talked to the same people who many have become offline friends . At Christmas and special occasions we would all come in with our OCCASION name.If you mean to have another alias to trick someone about something said then I dont agree. I beleive just to confront the person if you want to know something. My years in chat have taught me many things and the best is that not too many people online are trustworthy. So if you are hinting at some kind of relationship and you want to know if it's serious and you feel the need to check it out with another alias.. I have one thing to say .. END IT !! Without trust there is no relationship .

What are some rules you think should be posted on an online community?

My friend and I are setting up a message board and we want to know what rules we should have. The forum is mainly directed to teens, however anyone is welcome. It's a general chat site with places to talk about Art, Religion, Culture, Games, Media, and anything else. It also has a real-life site RPG, active staff members, and personal member blogs.

What rules do you think should be enforced on the forums to protect the site without making the staff too powerful?

What do you think we should include in a staff list terms to follow to prevent one or two staff members from having too much power?

What are some rules you think should be posted on an online community?
You should have one or maybe two admins. At least a moderator for each section of your board ( they can be the moderators of the subsections as well ).

Speaking of the rules I think that it should be the same as every message board: no piracy, no links for adult material, no racism, no insults to other members, no offensive language, and a few others.
Reply:- no excessive bad language

- use semi-proper grammar, not internet slang

- no NSFW topics

- No sex talk

- Don't share personal information (like last name, address, phone numbers, place of work)

- No "flaming" and insulting others

- Respect everyone's opinion

- Have fun!

I would give each staff member a section or two of the board to monitor and have the ability to delete posts containing inappropriate material/topics, and have someone managing the whole thing.

Good luck, sounds like a good idea!
Reply:You should have rules that prevent flaming and bashing others. Enforce all rules with IP bans of course! Also make rules that prevent spamming and lewd topics! I hope this is a good start for ya'! ^__^

Most forums really can turn to hell without good mods/admins, so it'll mostly be your and your friends' jobs to keep the bad people banned!
Reply:ok.. i have started several boards for MMORPG's (Massive Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game). the famous game, Runescape being one of them (www.runescape.com for more info or www.runehq.com for a fan site)

one of the things you will need, since you say its for everybody, is No cussing. we dont want some little kid getting on and getting ur site banned from the internet...

the second thing is: no Flaming (fighting over a topic or going way way way overboard with a rant about something someone else said).

and the third minimum thing you need is: no racist, sexual, jokes, comments, remarks, questions, vids, etc.

after that... what i reccoment is: DON'T SAY "All users must put in" *amount* " posts per week/month/day/etc or their account will be deleted" this onlly drives them away...

and something else, dont make EVERYONE an admin when you upgrade them... look for people that will stick to their job, when you're looking for a moderator. if the person doesnt do their job, notify them at-least once, if they continue to not do their job... send them a message telling them they're fired and remove them from the mod position.

thats it/... e-mail me if you have any questions

Which blog service lets me manage and host my own online community?

I am trying to find a blog service that will allow me to have admin rights to everything, where I can host and manage all blogs on my site. I guess it would be like my own blogger, or wordpress

Which blog service lets me manage and host my own online community?
The very popular blog service LiveJournal is free and open source software. This means that if you had a server ($60 to $100 USD a month depending on where you go) you could install, run and manage your own instance of LiveJournal on your own server.

On another note, you can easily use MT (MovableType) to manage multiple blogs. Its been around for ages and there is a huge community that contributes.

Dear Joyce,

I use TradeKing and am very satisfied. TradeKing is the online stock trading site to checkout for low cost trading. This is their thing and SmartMoney.com, Barron’s and Kiplinger all agree. If you are looking for the best prices on trades, this is the place to start. And yes, they have streaming quotes and streaming charts with real-time indicators.

Trading option spreads in an IRA account may be possible if you fits in with your investment strategy.

Does taking online classes in community college look bad to a University?

I go to a top rated community college and I am enrolled in online classes, as well as class which take place on campus. I was told that it looks bad to Universities to take classes online. Is this true? If so, how come?

Does taking online classes in community college look bad to a University?
Not at all . . as long as the course is through an accredited community college and you do well in the course (A or a B) it doesn't matter at all if it is on-line or traditional. If you want more info on what will transfer and what wont, contact the institution that you want to transfer to.
Reply:I think it depends on how many courses you take on line and the type of course you take. For instance, if the course is a low level gen. ed. course I think it would be fine, but if the course is an advanced high level course I would not take it on line. Another thing to keep in mind if you plan on transferring the course to the University you are probably better off taking the class in the classroom, if the class is just to meet a community college requirement then it probably would be OK to take it on line. Remember that classes taken on line can be more difficult due to the lack of classroom teaching--so you will have to read everything and study harder.

I think one of the main reasons that Universities frown upon on line classes is that it is hard to prove who really did the work and they don't want to waste their time and space on you if you don't deserve it.

How do I connect my PS2 to the online community?(I have one of the old PS2s, the big ones)?
You must buy a Network adapter for the old PS2.

You also need a broadband Internet connection where you can connect with an Ethernet cord (e.g. a DSL or Cable modem or even better a Router).

Then you connect the Network adapter to the PS2, and insert the Network Access Disc. You follow the step by step instructions and let the PS2 save your settings to a Memory Card.

Is Yahoo is doing a disservice to the online community by constantly touting wwwbaysportspicks.com on Answers?

Www.baysportspicks.com must pay someone at Yahoo a lot of money, because they show up every weekend, all weekend on Yahoo Sports. And they suck! Don't believe their bragging -- there is a reason they haven't updated their overall record since September 24. You'd be a fool to pay money for their picks.

What is the meaning of word 'ORKUT', an online community supported by google?

I want to the word meaning of 'orkut'. Anybody knows the answer?

What is the meaning of word 'ORKUT', an online community supported by google?
orkut

The correct title of this article is orkut. The initial letter is capitalized due to technical restrictions.

orkut is an Internet social network service run by Google and named after its creator, Google employee Orkut Büyükkökten. It claims to be designed to help users meet new friends and maintain existing relationships. Similar to Friendster, orkut goes a step further by permitting "communities" of users. It is also invitation-only: users must be invited to join the community by someone already there.

History

Orkut was quietly launched on January 22, 2004 by Google, the search engine company. Orkut Büyükkökten, a Turkish software engineer, developed it as an independent project while working at Google (permitted by its policy). Some discomfort with this exists among users and potential users of orkut, especially since Google's other noteworthy product of 2004, the Web-based email client Gmail, allows the company to automatically scan the text of users' private emails in order to target ads toward them.

While previously working for Affinity Engines, he had developed a similar system, InCircle, intended for use by university alumni groups. In late June 2004, Affinity Engines filed suit against Google, claiming that Büyükkökten and Google based orkut on inCircle code. The allegation is based on the presence of 9 identical bugs in orkut that also exist in InCircle.

Originally, the orkut community was felt to be elite, because its membership is by invitation only. However, at the end of July 2004 orkut surpassed the 1,000,000 member mark, and at the end of September it surpassed the 2,000,000 mark. As of May 02,2006, 70.81% of orkut's members were from Brazil, followed by 11.90% from the United States, 3.43% from India, 2.01% from Iran and 2.10% from Pakistan.

While the intended invitation method was e-mail between two acquitances, invitations to orkut are obtainable via the web with a bit of diligence or eBay, just like Gmail invites.

Orkut's use as a social tool is complex, because various people frequently try to add strangers to their own pool of friends, more often than not just to increase the number indicating their number of friends next to their name in their profile. Many "add-me" communities exist, solely for this purpose. A large number of bogus, cloned, fake, invisible and "orphaned" profiles also exist.

Controversy

Popularity in Brazil

Increase in Brazilian UsersThe orkut community has been watching a large surge of Brazilian users registering on its service. This is a known and curious fact. The number of Brazilian orkut users has reached approximately 72.72% of the total users, followed by United States, with about 10.92%. Due to the number of Brazilian users and communities in the Portuguese language, users from other parts of the world became upset with the service, when it established Portuguese as the first "alternate default language," (as English was the primary default language) prompting many community owners to enforce an English-only posting policy. Some went as far as to start online communities and discussion groups dedicated to complain about this phenomenon. Hoaxes have also been spread, with the intention of tricking Brazilian users to change their nationality in orkut. As a reaction to this surge of Brazilian users, orkut recently introduced Portuguese as a second language to its interface, due to countless requests. The surge of Brazilian users has been documented elsewhere: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5].

According to statistics orkut has also become popular in the Eastern-European country of Estonia where greater than 3% (June 2005) of the population are registered orkut users. This is the highest percentage of any single country's population using the service. Brazil holds the second place with about 2.5% of the population using Orkut. All the other countries in top 10 list have users amounting to less than 0.5% of each given country.

In a recent interview to a Brazilian news site [6] the creator of orkut said he doesn't understand the phenomenon and complains about the fact that North-American press and users are ignoring the service and using similar services like Friendster, Myspace and Facebook. He also noted that Brazil is actually the main focus of orkut.

Instant celebrity

During U2's Vertigo show in Brazil, which was broadcast by TV to 80 million people, Bono invited a Brazilian girl, Katilce Miranda, to stage. This is a very common act in their shows, but the girl's orkut profile skyrocketed her into a celebrity status in orkut: On the week after the show, she received about 3 million scrapbook entries, and more than a thousand communities about her were created. [7] [8] [9]

On 3 March 2006 the profile was deleted with around 3.7 million scraps. In interview to Transamérica radio on morning 4 March 2006, Katilce said that she was not responsible for removing the profile, but rather stated that "it was orkut". Recent rumours say that Katilce was invited by Rede Globo [10] to become an actress, most likely to act in telenovelas.

Flooders and Fake profiles

As the number of orkut users increased and due to the low reliability and security of the site, there was a rise in the number of fake and clone profiles, something that can be achieved just in a matter of a few minutes. Due to the large number of users and the deactivation of the jail system, the profiles were often left unremoved or, when removed, recreated easily. These profiles are normally created to troll, to spam, to flood or just for fun. It isn't hard to find a users owning more than one profile, with some stating they own hundreds.

Later, the clones started to flood communities and scrapbooks by submitting topics or scraps hundreds or thousands of times manually. Shortly thereafter, by simply examining the source code of the page, they found it was possibly to create Javascript codes to automatically flood the site. Soon (given that orkut is a complex social network), flooding wars started to occur frequently between some antagonistic groups. Another new phenomenon is Scrapbook wars, when a group of users are engaged to zero or increase the scrapbook counter of someone.

On January 1, 2005 a Brazilian hacker attacked orkut, stealing community ownership rights, using phishing techniques. Eventually, various phishing sites were developed with the intent of stealing other people's accounts and communities. A couple of months later, invisible profiles, communities and topics started to appear in orkut. This could be achieved by using HTML escaping codes and 1x1 pixel photos to fool the engine behind the site.

In the August of 2005 a freeware program made in Delphi called Floodtudo ("tudo" in portuguese means "everything" - this was developed by a brazilian) was created specifically for flooding orkut. It quickly spread through the users and was easily downloadable (the most common Floodtudo versions were 1.2, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.2). As this program was massively used by thousands of spammers, a big spam wave struck orkut in September and October of 2005.

As the flooding of orkut was getting out of control, the developers implemented some features in order to stop this, such as not allowing two or more verbatim topics or scrapbook entries to be submitted, forcing the user to wait before posting another topic or scrapbook entry, and the usage of captchas. They gave more rights to community moderators as well, so that they can just ban users instead of relying on the developers to remove them, and now community moderators are able to mass-delete posts too.

Other ways of profile and community attacks still exist, like testimonial flooding attacks on scrapbook and member counters, multi-profile floods and social engineering.

Many reasons exist for flooding. As a social network, it's obvious that people have or develop enemies on the site, but some of them attack simply for the sake of trolling. Flooding is one of the reasons for orkut's poor site performance, as it causes a heavy overload on orkut servers, decreasing their reliability even more.

Hate groups

There has recently been controversy revolving around the use of orkut by various hate groups. Virulent racists allegedly have a solid following there. Because of the invitation-only structure, closed groups of like-minded people are able to thrive. Several hate communities focused on racism, Nazism, white supremacy have been deleted due to guideline violation. However the number of these communities and profiles has not stopped growing because they can be very easily created and it is hard for orkut to check them.

In 2005, various cases of racism were denounced to police and reported in the Brazilian media. [11] [12] In 2006, a judicial measure was opened by the Brazil federal justice denouncing a 20-year-old student accused with racism against blacks and spreading defamatory content on orkut. [13]. Brazilian Federal Justice intimated Google [14] on March 2006 to explain the crimes occurred in Orkut.

Copyright disclaimer

Orkut's terms of service state:

By submitting, posting or displaying any Materials on or through the orkut.com service, you automatically grant to us a worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicenseable, transferable, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable right to copy, distribute, create derivative works of, publicly perform and display such Materials.

This does not mean that any contribution to the orkut community (be it forum posts or photos) becomes the property of the site owner; while it means that orkut can use any submitted information for any purpose, the original submitter doesn't lose any rights to his materials.

Although other popular social network services such as Friendster and MySpace contain similar statements, this policy offended many dedicated orkut users, some who terminated their accounts as a protest.

Iranian censorship

Orkut was very popular in Iran, but the website is blocked by the government. As they say, it is due to national security issues, as orkut users have the ability to spread messages rapidly, but the government says it's due to Islamic ethical issues about dating and match making. To get around this block, sites such as "orkutproxy.com" (now defunct) were made for Iranian users. Other websites such as Yahoo! Groups and Google Groups have communities dedicated to receiving updates on the newest location of Iran's orkut proxy. Though it was once possible to bypass governmental blockage of orkut, the site has closed its HTTPS pages on all anonymous proxies. Now it is almost impossible for ordinary users to visit this site inside Iran.

Jail

One of orkut's most infamous features was the "jail." Users who misbehave or are reported to misbehave are "jailed." Their account was suspended, their site access was reasonably limited, and their current profile picture was temporarily replaced with a silhouette of a man behind prison bars. Although this serves a useful purpose, the way users are selected to be jailed has caused heated discussions and complaints among orkut users: every user's profile has a "Report as Bogus" button, which, if pressed, automatically flags the user to be jailed. Conceivably, this means that anyone can be jailed at any time by pressing a single button.

Another way to be jailed is to "act like a robot." To safeguard against bots and other automation, users who add friends or join communities in a very quick or repetitive manner, or perform similar actions, are jailed. Often, however, this happens when a new user is invited to join the site and finds many people he/she already knows and tries to add them as friends immediately.

Users who were jailed were not informed of the reason, nor were they notified that they had been jailed. Jailing usually did not last long (up to 24 hours in most cases), but was often disturbing to users, as there is no direct contact to the orkut team (their contact form only answers with template emails) and jailing limits one to waiting or posting in a designated forum. Ironically, site users once reported that Orkut Büyükkökten, the creator of the site, was jailed. The jail system is currently deactivated due to its inefficiency.

Speed and reliability

The "Bad, bad server" screen, one of the best-known sights on orkut.Due to the massive load on the server, orkut has a bad habit of breaking down, running slow or returning one of its infamous "Bad, bad server. No donut for you." error messages. These slowdowns mostly can be noticed during the day hours in the Americas, which probably explains the reason as well, as more than 80% of the orkut users are from the American continent, more than 70% from Brazil alone.

Name meanings

Orkut received its name from the first name of the its creator. However, in other languages, the word "orkut" has actual meanings:

In Turkish, Orkut means "the holy meeting place."

In Finnish slang, it means "orgasms" or, more generally, "pleasure of the body"

Reply:I've been around for a while too, you are truly wise and open minded, what we should do is to try to understand each other.
Reply:I am a Christian, and I feel no hostility toward the Muslims. However, the Bible seems to provide a response to this question, so in a way, God is talking here.

"The angel of the LORD also said to her:

"You are now with child

and you will have a son.

You shall name him Ishmael,

for the LORD has heard of your misery.

He will be a wild donkey of a man;

his hand will be against everyone

and everyone's hand against him,

and he will live in hostility

toward all his brothers." "

It is believed that the Arabs are the children of Ishmael, so that may be it - considering that Christians consider themselves spiritual descendants of Abraham.
Reply:Personally I'd say it has a great deal to do with simple minds and political pressures. Governments and religious leaders working to alienate the population that is currently on their "hit-list" either politically or culturally.

Secondly it's so very many small minds who follow the dogma of their childhood brainwashing. Those who don't have the ability to think for themselves and be open and more embracing of the world and those around them who are simply different.
Reply:Yes we should respect each other's beliefs even if we don't agree with them. This is a place for people with honest questions to ask and they should be able to expect honest answers, not all the rude, ill-informed back-chat that is on here so much of the time. Apologies to those of you who really do seek to answer honest questions without being nasty.
Reply:It's great you notice it.

We shouldn't go against other people belief/religion. Both religion teach us to do good.

If one of the devotee of a religion hatre other religion, two possibility: either the religion is misleading or that devotee just "wearing" the name of the religion but not practice it.

All human is same, that is subject to decay.

enmity is not from muslim side atleast. Why would muslims bash Jesus and bible, when muslims believe in Jesus and accept his gospel as word from God. stay more, and you will notice people attacking islam and quran. no muslim will ever attack bible or Jesus. by proving jesus is not God from bible, is not considered as bashing or attacking. because its our right to look at previous scriptures, because we believe in it, and to let people know the truth. I DONT SEE ANY ENMITY BETWEEN CHRISTIANS AND MUSLIMS HERE. yes there are certain people who attack bible and quran both, and these are black sheeps. and i am against these both.

why would muslims show enmity to christians when quran says that they are nearest to us. ....

"...nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say, "We are Christians": because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant." Quran (5: 82)

Peace be on you.
Reply:At least as far as Christians go (I'm speaking as an evangelical minister), too many Christians think that the evidence for their beliefs should trump their love for others. Other people can believe totally that what we say about Jesus and the Bible is true, but if they don't see His love in our lives, nothing else will matter. Paul put it very well in 1 Corinthians 13 that without love, we are absolutely nothing. We need to remember that our identity as Christians has nothing to do with us and everything to do with Jesus.
Reply:Right you are.
