Which group is more sinister in our "online community"?

The trolls or the self-described vigilantes so intent upon deleting their idea of “inappropriate content”?

Now, pay attention…because I would NOT be surprised if my account gets deleted simply for posing this question.

I suspect there is a MAJOR power trip behind much of the recent activity in this category.

Even if it's "only" virtually, following a leader blindly is always dangerous and self-destructive. Please think for yourself: do NOT allow an egomaniac to determine your morality for you.

P.S. (My friends and those who are confused, don’t worry: I am not talking to you. :-) The people I'm addressing know EXACTLY what I mean. )

Which group is more sinister in our "online community"?
Trolls may in fact be a bunch of turds but at the risk of sounding as if I am defending them, they are attempting to have their own kind of fun albeit the anthesis of fun as perceived by most of the rest of us. They can be ignored and can cause a major inconvenience for their targeted victims but they are in it for their own amusement I believe.

Vigilantes on the other hand, assume the position of self-appointed purifiers of the Y!A site and carry out their sentences, I believe, without regard as to the popular opinion of other users. They have a view as to what this site should be like and the type of persons who should be allowed to interact here. Those who do not fit their mold are targeted for removal.

There are people here who post questions I do not approve of and some avatars may be offensive to a majority of us here but I, for one, am an adult and realize that I do not have to answer questions that I may not like or look at avatars that may be out of line. The thought of material that is not directly in line with MY thoughts and opinions being posted on here does not even cause the slightest ripple on my pond. This is not my life, I do not have to make Y!A into a Utopia that is a haven for me.

I think that if it were up to me, the vigilantes would be excluded from the site. Think about life in the real world, there are trolls everywhere we have to deal with, go to the DMV and you may find some there. These trolls are not fired from their jobs simply because of their attitudes. We see from time to time in the news vigilantes, they very often end up in jail locked away from the rest of society for their actions.

I have dealt with numerous "trolls" in the business world in the last 20 or so years, I look back and think how I have learned a lot from them about dealing with difficult people. I cannot think of many famous vigilantes that served much purpose in my life's experiences.
Reply:I read the troll boss' 360, and I agree with what you saying. But I also understand her view.

We would not need to worry about this if people weren't so eager to put those suspected trolls in their place by responding to their questions and giving them the fuel they need to continue "getting at you." That is the "fun" of their game. Just say "NO" and move on. There are times when I have logged on only to find so much hateful garbage that I just have to log off. Or I stick to what my contacts are doing; I have found more interesting questions that way. Thanks in part to you, Colored by Numbers - and to answer your question...

I think the vigilantes are more dangerous because they do their thing with a sense of righteousness and of support from the Y!A team, and the power trip that they get, too. You can't ignore them; you can ignore the trolls!
Reply:I said that aiaia57 is idiot.

Reply:If these asinine trolls are harassing you my dear adept amigo, then try to brush-off there attacks by blocking them and only allowing your friends to view your questions on your page.

Here is a link to the page that will direct you to where you can block these deficient trolls by simply checking the three boxes under Yahoo! Answers Network.

Reply:Trolls, I ain't afraid of ...
Reply:Troll Patrol Boss is sending you messages to huh?

I delete 'em all now

I can't support terrorist activities on the Y!Aliban's behalf
Reply:Your keywords:

sociology, throng, group, cluster, woman, Hitler,...

So a group has some clusters (A, B, C,...)

For A , the cluster B, C..F. has an “inappropriate content”.

For G, the cluster A, H..M. has an “inappropriate content”.

etc.

As number you can see X %26gt; Y %26gt; Z...

As vote you can see N %26gt; P %26gt; W...

Do you work for a firm of publicity?

What do you acquire knowledge or win smb.'s love or earn one's (daily) bread or carry off a prize, etc...with this question?

I am one and only one.
Reply:The biggest mistake that vigilantes make, is assuming that their community is a dictatorship, not a democracy. They assume that authority or force is more powerful than public opinion. Or in other words, that the sword is mightier than the pen.
Reply:Words are Powerful

hmmm. I don't want any monitors here...I want no 'guards'. This is a free forum and I don't like feeling like a prisoner...

I have a boss already. Let's face it we Love to break rules here because we can't in the 'real' world.

This is a lovely place...I want to hear Every-ones voice here.... Then I will make my own choice.

PS-- I am having a yard sale at the moment and 'soccer moms' have stopped by, introducing themselves, since I have just moved in----- and all I keep thinking is they want to meet me to destroy me in some way...to control me!

Paranoid....only if they are really NOT out to get you...:)
Reply:Well I was pretty sure that the vigilantes were the trolls, but maybe not. Perhaps there is some overlap though? I don't like to report people....I really don't. I only report when I see racism or discrimination. For instance, every time Skinhead Charlie rears another head, I just click the pretty little flag next to his question, because we don't need that to befoul our computer screens. But some people get reported for the stupidest reasons. That's why there is the Thumbs down button. It works quite well. I deal with a lot of trolls that way. The vigilantes are more dangerous because they lack the common deceny of many users on Yahoo and are too flag happy.
Reply:The self-described vigilantes are way more sinister. It's fine with me if they eliminate gross avatars. But nooooo. . . . it's so much fun being a mean-spirited goober with SS Toten Kopf ideations, let's all get together and delete people, wheeee . . . if we do not agree with how they think. Pictures is one thing, but the rest is only words. I don't believe it's about offending a 13 year old that can actually read and with another click of the mouse go to www.LadyDominatrix dot com or whatever. For that matter, have you ever heard the mouth on a 13 year old? Gimme a break.

I think I'm gonna marry the girl next door.
Reply:Honey, let me post my q...I just asked and since received hatemail and violation notice on

How about a Yahoo Mafia? YES THIS IS A Q IN PROPER FORM!!?

us against the troll patrol...these sorry losers who are on a power trip are taking us out not just the trolls but b/c they are jealous of us and have nothing better to do in their miserable lifes but to pour through the thousands of Q%26amp;A and report---LOSERS!! It's nice to report and move on the trolls but these people take a way freedom of speech--can you say "HEIL HITLER" because some lame-o needs a life!

That's my thoughts on the troll patrol!
Reply:there was a 360 left out... she put this up on Mr. Troll Patrol Bosses 360... saying if you want to get to know the real me...
