When you become a member of an online community forum, do site moderators have knowledge of your IP address?

Yes, (most of the time). If you really want to find out if they do or not. You gotta do what most people don't do (including me). Read the "private policy"(usualy located in very small letters in the sign up page). Everytime you join a forum or anything similar you have the choice to read their private policy. It also tells you how they will use your IP address ect. Have fun ;)

Digg: "We receive and store certain types of information whenever you interact with us. Digg automatically receives and records certain "traffic data" on our server logs from your browser including your IP address, Digg cookie information, and the page you requested. Digg uses this traffic data to help diagnose problems with its servers, analyze trends and administer the website"

Myspace: "MySpace.com also logs non-personally-identifiable information including IP address, profile information, aggregate user data, and browser type, from users and visitors to the site This data is used to manage the website, track usage and improve the website services. This non-personally-identifiable information may be shared with third-parties to provide more relevant services and advertisements to members. User IP addresses are recorded for security and monitoring purposes"

When you become a member of an online community forum, do site moderators have knowledge of your IP address?
yes and no, yes they (if they choose to record it) know your external IP but if your PC is behind a router of some kind it has an internal IP address and they do not know that, as the router replaces your internal IP with its external IP and unless you have a static IP your external IP changes after "x" time (defined by your ISP)

Reply:Only administrators who has rights to them are able to see the IP Address. They usually use that to ban people who has been trolling, flaming or spamming the forum. In order for the ban to work, they need IP address of the poster.
Reply:They Sure Do..
Reply:In most cases they do.
Reply:The only people that can have access to your IP address are the Administrators of the website. But it depends on the website and its creators.

Reply:I've had administrator on a forum once, I had the access to see everyone's IP adress.

No big deal though, you use it to IP ban users, etc..
