How can teachers use to build community in online courses?

Should the strategies be different for high school students than college students or graduate students? Why or why not.

How can teachers use to build community in online courses?
In one online class I took the professor had a discussion board . Every Saturday he would post a topic and every student was required to post an original opinion on the subject and a reply to another's post. The first week the posts were relatively slow and boring but by the third week the discussions were very lively and interesting. The overall effect was each student got to know the others a little better in turn formed a closer bond that did not happen in other on-line courses I have taken.
Reply:Using team projects can get students to become more realaxed and act a a cohort. Also having students take a PROGRAM as opposed to a single course helps them get to know each other. There are textbooks for online professors.
